Still Love At First Sight For T.M. Frazier
T.M. Frazier just keeps getting it right! Preppy Part 1: The Life & Death of Samuel Clearwater, is the 5th book in the King Series and T.M. Frazier managed to make me just as trigger happy with this sample as she did with all of her other books! Go ahead, do it! Pull the “BUY” trigger, I promise you won’t regret it 😉
I’m gonna put up the ol’ stop sign right here and say that you will be lost if you haven’t read the King Series so it is best that you do a 180 and go start your journey with King. Heck, you can go one step further and start where it ALL BEGAN and read the prequel, The Dark Light of Day and the Dark Needs novella (a novella that I loved by the way)!
I will start off saying that in my opinion (and we all know mine is gospel) T.M. Frazier is an author that you either ‘love’ or ‘hate’ and she delivers the WORST cliffhangers! All of her books have a certain darkness to them, whether it be, The Dark Light of Day prequel or the King Series, it’s there so she either has your engine purring like a kitten or things are sputtering resulting in a whole lotta ‘not liking’ going on.
I will stop with my blathering and sally on with my review! As always, push any and all innocent bystanders out of the comfy chairs, grab your treats of the day, and settle in for my review on Preppy Part 1: The Life & Death of Samuel Clearwater!
A Game Of Blackmail
Like most of T.M. Frazier’s books, Preppy: The Life & Death of Samuel Clearwater, is told in duel point of views; our heroine, Andrea or Dre, and our Hero, Samuel or Preppy or Prep. If you’re expecting it to pick up right where ‘Soulless’ ended like I was, then you’ll be surprised to know that it doesn’t. It actually starts all the way back to when King is first incarcerated and the surprises don’t stop there.
Dre and Preppy actually meet at Dre’s lowest of lows and oddly enough it’s Prep that pulls her back from the abyss. A huge surprise for both Preppy and Dre is that Dre has no idea who Preppy is and the kind of genuine fear he instills in people……until she’s staring down the barrel of his gun and looking at his unhinged smile. And this is the start of Dre and Preppy’s roller coaster ride to finding one and other.
Preppy has plans and they include a game of blackmailing and his main target is Dre. Blackmail is blackmail and Dre has no choice but to play by Prep’s rules. Preppy’s blackmail scheme is actually quite ingenious but even with his ingenuity, his plans start to take a bit of a different spin, one that he didn’t see coming and thus begins Preppy’s internal war of “can’t keep her” and wanting to have what he feels he can’t.
Dre is not so far behind, even with her trying to safe guard herself from him and his charismatic ways his feelings of not being able to ‘keep’ Dre and Dre knows this but sometimes the heart wants what the heart wants.
But everyone harbors secrets and Dre and Preppy are no different. It’s a matter of who’s secret will bring down the other.
Every game must have a winner and a loser……
What Does T. M. Frazier Give Us?
We get a heroine in Dre that is so messed up that it’s almost unbearable to watch. She is her own demise and somehow T.M. Frazier makes you sympathize with Dre even when she is on self destruct mode. I don’t say this often…or ever, but Dre had one of the biggest weaknesses and made her one of the weakest heroine’s that I have ever come across (and it has nothing to do with character development) but that weakness is actually what makes her one of the strongest heroine’s I’ve come across as well, and it’s mind blowing. I know it’s a complete oxymoron and you have to read Preppy Part 1: The Life and Death of Samuel Clearwater, in order to really get what I’m saying. The struggle that Dre has with this weakness and for her to come out where she does? Incredible! T.M. Frazier somehow makes Dre’s weakness be her biggest strength and it is nothing short of beautiful to watch.
Preppy is not the Hero that I was expecting. T.M. Frazier gives us the gritty, raw, details that we were so desperately wanting but she gives so much more with Preppy. Where Dre’s experiences lead to her weakness, Preppy’s experiences lead to his strength. But that strength also became his biggest weakness. T.M. Frazier definitely delivers on the charming yet slightly unhinged, a little bit psychotic Preppy that we seen in all the other books but she also shows a softer side. I can’t say lighter side cause that’s not at all true but there’s a vulnerable side that wars with…well Preppy’s own brand of crazy.
T.M. Frazier gives us a totally different book with Preppy Part 1: The Life & Death of Samuel Clearwater and it’s one that I don’t think anyone will be expecting. The differences between Dre and Preppy are about as similar as black and white. But you put them together and you can achieve a beautiful shade of grey. You just don’t know who posses more of the dark vs the light.
My Final Thoughts On Preppy Part 1: The Life & Death of Samuel Clearwater?
I went into Preppy Part 1: The Life & Death of Samuel Clearwater in a bundle nerves; excitement, nervousness, and a bit of skepticism. The skepticism only because it’s a tall order for an author to keep things from being redundant all the way into a 5th book. My skepticism was put to rest with this one.
Dre was a heroine that I wasn’t expecting and one that I found I didn’t care for all that much at times. But oddly enough, I found myself relating to her and even understanding her choices, I didn’t necessarily agree with them, but I could understand them. I went from sympathizing with Dre, to not liking her at all, then just wanting to hold her and take away all her hurts. How you can go from not liking someone to wanting to take on their hurt is beyond me but that’s exactly what T.M. Frazier did! And to top it off, I actually loved her come the end! Who knew?
I think my best description of Preppy is, he’s basically a modern day, pastel, bow tie, suspender wearing, trigger happy, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I just never knew what I was going to get with him. He was everything I was expecting but also so much more that I wasn’t. He still possessed that charismatic, cocky, over confident, sense of humor that had me giggling like a school girl. T.M. Frazier still gave me that darkness that I got little glimpses of in the other books but the softness and internal battle is not at all what I was prepared for.
I don’t think you even need to ask but because I’m nice and awesome, I’ll tell you. YES! There are sexy smexy, smutty times…although I’m gonna have to say that those adjectives are tame. This is more erotic and it runs on the dark side…but anyone that has read anything by T.M. Frazier knows that there is always that possibility.
Preppy Part 1: The Life & Death of Samuel Clearwater was just as twisted, dark, and sharp edged mind warp as I was expecting but it’s also got a good dose of…softness that I wasn’t. I loved it as much as I did King, Tyrant, Lawless, and Soulless so it’s no surprise it’s on my ‘re-read’ shelf. Nothing but praise from me T.M. Frazier!

But there is no need to throw the well deserved tantrum because Preppy Part 2: The Life & Death of Samuel Clearwater is out 😉
